Anyone Can Drown, No One Should

The Department of Health (DOH), the World Health Organization Philippines and The Policy Center commemorated this year’s Global Drowning Prevention Day last July 27, 2022 (Wednesday) through a social media talk that was broadcasted live on Facebook.

Spearheading this event were health experts and advocates underscoring that drowning is a crucial and urgent public health issue in the Philippines. OIC Undersecretary Dr. Beverly Lorraine Ho of the DOH Health Promotion Bureau gave her welcome message. Dr. John Juliard Go of the WHO provided an overview of the drowning situation globally. Ms. Maria Fatima “Jofti” Villena of The Policy Center discussed about the various community actions to prevent drowning, Ms. Jerimae Cabero of the DOH-Health Promotion Bureau shared the current actions that the government is taking to prevent drowning, especially in the most vulnerable populations and areas in the country. And Mr. Arne Navarra, CEO and President of the Philippine Life Saving Society, talked about how NGOs play a strong role in supporting the current drowning preventions in the country.
